Halte au contrôle numérique is a grassroots collective established in 2019 in Saint-Étienne, France, emerging as a response to controversial digital surveillance initiatives. The organization was initially formed to oppose the Serenicity project, which planned to install microphones in urban furniture in a working-class neighborhood, and to challenge the establishment of a Google workshop in the city center.
As a citizen-led movement comprising individuals with diverse perspectives, Stop Digital Control works through various channels to protect public interests in the digital age. The collective organizes conferences and educational workshops to raise public awareness about the implications of widespread digitalization, while actively engaging with public authorities on digital policy matters. At its core, the organization's mission is to address critical questions surrounding society's digital transformation.
We strive to establish essential safeguards and restore the political dimension to digital initiatives, ensuring that citizens maintain their voice in shaping the technological future of their communities. Through our work, we aim to prevent the depoliticization of important technological decisions that affect public life.
