The mission of the Villes Internet association is to defend republican values, public service and local democracy, in a society where access to the Internet has become a fundamental human right recognized by the UN.
Villes Internet is a non-profit association governed by the 1901 law, imagined by Florence Durand-Tornare in 1998 and founded in 2002. Transpolitical, it brings together more than 9000 elected officials, agents and local actors for the development of the citizen Internet and urban digital technology in the territories. The Villes Internet association lives on the contributions of its members and the support of public or private organizations.
Since the creation in 1998 of the "National Label Territories, Cities and Villages Internet", this association has been sustainable and has a high loyalty rate of its members (450 out of 2100 communities committed to the label). It has acquired national and international legitimacy, in a network that also reaches French-speaking and Latin American countries. Historically chaired by an academic, it thus ensures its political neutrality and the scientific approach to its mission. Its board of directors is composed of at least 11 mayors representative of France's geographical and political diversity.
Recognised by the State since its creation, it brings together nearly twenty public and private partners in its Council of Partners for the Territories of Tomorrow. To bring its network of more than 9000 local public actors to life and facilitate their exchange of experience for local digital policies, the Internet Cities association applies an innovative method of networking, combining face-to-face and remote participatory methods.
